While my daily face-washing routine serves as a pretty good exfoliant for everyday use, I do like to use something a little heavier once a week or so. Like my face wash, it involves ingredients you probably already own, and it only involves two: olive oil and brown sugar.
While we all know sugar is the enemy of our insides, its reputation is quite the opposite for the superficial. As a skin exfoliator, it works magic. Combined with olive oil, which will make your skin baby-soft, you get a perfect combination for flake-free skin.
Simply put a few tablespoons of brown sugar into a small bowl. Add a small amount of olive oil. You want the consistency to be like a body scrub you use in the shower. It doesn’t really matter, though. Just mix until you like the consistency, and apply to your face after you have removed your make up.
Massage lightly (don’t press too hard) into your skin, and rinse off with water. Occasionally I do this more than just a couple times in a week, because I love the results so much, and so far it has not proven to be too much for my skin. While many store-bought exfoliants can be too harsh, this one is not at all. Now, go create and let your face enjoy a little special treatment!
Jenny Williams is an Oklahoma-native who moved to Washington, D.C. in 2009 to fulfill her dream of living in her favorite city and working on Capitol Hill. It took her two-and-a-half-years, however, to realize her true passion was not in writing someone else’s policies behind a desk all day, but rather, in the thing she has always loved: observing the beauty of the world, and writing about it. Leaving politics without glancing back, she entered the less glamorous private sector which allows her more time for writing, and her other favorite things: making breakfast, tearing up while reading Anne of Green Gables for the fiftieth time, and exploring the District with her husband.
