For a lot of 2013, I’ve been seeing jam cocktails in various places around the Internet, like here and here, and I’ve been dying to give one a try. They just sound so good—and the varieties are endless! Using jam or preserves in your cocktails is a killer shortcut. It gives the drink a ton of body and a sweetness that’s hard to beat. Sure, you can use infused liquors or take the time to make simple syrups from scratch, but why bother? Jam cocktails are so easy to mix up for a crowd and are perfect for your holiday parties.
For this version, I used some leftover cherry jam from a baking project that I’ve been trying to finish off, but any type of jam or jelly would be delicious here. I love a good, chunky cherry jam on my toast, but any type you would eat on its own will work in this recipe. I bet you could even use a savory or herby jam too. Use your imagination, and I’d love to hear what you come up with!
Jam Cocktail: Bourbon Cherry Smash
2 tablespoons cherry jam
2 ounces bourbon
4.5 ounces ginger ale
Add the jam and bourbon to a glass. Mix until the jam is dissolved and the mixture is combined. Top with the ginger ale and add ice, if desired (I love my cocktails on the rocks, but serve it straight up, if you prefer).
