If you’ve been following along with the latest incarnation of everyone’s favorite fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw, you know that the high school era phenom (now played by Anna Sophia Robb on The Carrie Diaries) totes around a personalized purse reminiscent of her future self’s iconic nameplate necklace. We love the idea of a classic black handbag made modern with splatters of nail polish and a little name recognition and how easily — and inexpensively– you get the look at home.
Black Handbag in real or faux leather (repurpose an old favorite or grab one at a local thrift store)
4-5 nail polishes in your favorite shades
Fabric paint or a Sharpie marker that will show on leather or faux leather material
Layer two or three layers of newspaper down on your work space to avoid accidental spills.
Tape any hardware (like buckles and zippers) on the purse to keep them from getting covered with paint splatters.
Dip the paint brush in one nail polish bottle and flick the excess paint onto the back and sides of the handbag.
Keep layering shades of paint until you get the desired affect and coverage.
Let stand for a half hour to 45 minutes before starting the opposite side.
Once the front, back and sides of the purse are covered with the desired amount of nail polish and dried completely, it’s time to personalize with your fabric paint or Sharpie markers. You can write your entire name, two or three initial monogram; whatever you want.
Let stand for another hour to ensure that your bag is fully dry before you wear it out and about.
Pair with your favorite ensemble and you’re ready to pound the pavement looking as fashion-forward as Carrie herself.
