Tired of your music and need something new to fill your eardrums? Consider podcasts as an awesome alternative to blasting a mix of Lorde and Ellie Goulding on your daily commutes to work, school, the bakery, the mall, outer space, etc. They’re free and you get to hear people gab about things that make you laugh, make you smarter, intrigue you, challenge you, give you useful knowledge, give you pointless knowledge or are just simply entertaining. There’s a podcast option for everyone, even the unique and glamorous Lydia reader!
Here are five distinct and engaging recommended podcasts:
How Did This Get Made – If you want the giggles, listen to Paul, June and Jason rip apart terrible movies from the past and present. With a lively cast of their comedian friends, these three discuss movies such as Catwoman, Anaconda and Crossroads and ultimately ask the paramount question of, “how did this get made?”
Fresh Air – This NPR classic has been on air since 1975 and garners over 4 million listeners each show. Host Terry Gross and her esteemed guests are definitely doing something right. The show takes an interview form, but really presents itself as an interesting conversation between cool people. Recent topics ranged from Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a review on a movie about the Egyptian revolution and an interview with Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey.
Stuff Mom Never Told You – In this podcast, hosts Cristen and Caroline take you on a wild ride through womanhood. Ever wonder the anthropology of pie? They have answers for you. Find yourself contemplating where all the women in hip hop are? You can learn that from them. What are your thoughts on women in math, tech and science? Episodes devoted to these topics exist! With resources provided for every podcast, this production from Discovery’s HowStuffWorks isn’t just full of opinions, it’s based upon research. Updated very regularly, there’s plenty of information to keep you learning about the life of ladies for days from your girls Cristen and Caroline, the gender experts.
Here’s the Thing – If you’re not automatically down to listen to this podcast purely because of the sultry gravel voice of host Alec Baldwin, luckily there are other attributes that make it worthwhile. This podcast features Mr. Baldwin in the role of interviewer. He likes to interrupt, but most of his caveats lead to stronger discussions and behind the scenes stories from Hollywood and beyond. Guests on Here’s the Thing include artists, performers, policy makers and other influential people. Make sure to check out episodes with Kristen Wiig and Lena Dunham. Totally Lydia approved.
The Nerdist – The Nerdist with Chris Hardwick is a fun pop culture based program that generally features a famous person, great stories, some swearing and lots of nerding out, as the title suggests. Chris and his two buddies, Jonah and Matt are huge TV fanatics so most shows are based around TV shows and their leading characters. Any die-hard 30 Rock/Tina Fey fans will thoroughly enjoy spending an hour listening to her regaling hilarious adventures from her life during the episode she was featured. And for those who have a serious celeb-crush on would be Mr. Christian Grey, Charlie Hunnam, or who are avid Sons of Anarchy fans, there’s an enlightening in-depth interview between Chad and Charlie on the podcast.
