In honor of the eight months of 2014 that have already passed us by, here are the eight best parts of music in 2014.
It has been a huge year for Ariana Grande. The 21-year-old has had two albums debut at number one on the Billboard charts in less than a year (2013’s Yours Truly and the newly released My Everything), multiple explosive collaborations with artists such as Jessie J (“Bang Bang”), Iggy Azalea (“Problem”), and Zedd (“Break Free”), and is currently the most streamed artist in the world on Spotify with 38.8 million streams last week. With stats like that, it is safe to say that 2014 belongs to Ariana Grande.
If Ariana Grande is ruling the music industry in 2014, it’s only fair to say that she is sharing the kingdom with Sam Smith. The British singer has had massive hits on the radio all over the world (Disclosure’s “Latch,” Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” and his own single, “Stay With Me”), and has connected with the public through his emotional debut album, In The Lonely Hour. The intimate album is not only my favorite album of the year so far, but it is poised to be one of my favorite albums of all time.
BEYONCE AT THE VMAS
Do I really need to explain why this was one of my favorite music moments of 2014? FLAWLESS.
MOVIES + MUSIC
If you haven’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, please stop reading this and go see it now. If you have seen it, you already know that it is accompanied by one of the most fun and best-selling soundtracks of the year. The soundtrack, appropriately titled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, is filled with classic hits that appeal to audiences both young and old. If older songs from artists such as The Jackson 5 and Marvin Gaye aren’t your thing, the soundtrack to The Fault In Our Stars should keep you entertained with original music from younger artists like Charli XCX and Birdy.
When there is an endless supply of new music in every corner of the Internet, it can be difficult finding an artist or song that truly stands out. Luckily, two artists by the names of Ryn Weaver and Vérité are making it very easy for us. With two very distinct voices and approaches to modern pop music, both artists are destined to become even more popular within the next year. Follow them both on Twitter @RynWeaver and @Verite.
WOMEN IN MUSIC
2014 did not disappoint when it came to music from some of our favorite female artists. The first half of the year saw new releases from Sia, Lily Allen, Angel Olsen, St. Vincent, MØ, Shakira, and Miranda Lambert, just to name a few. The rest of the year promises to be filled with just as much new material from some of the most influential women in music, and we couldn’t be more excited.
