Well another episode has come and gone and the affair between Mellie and Andrew is something fierce! We know what has driven them together and it’s very powerful. Unlike Mellie’s relationship with Fitz there is honesty there and kindness. Olivia however has seen the warning signs of their chemistry early on and has tried to stop it, but this tends to bring mixed reviews among audiences. This is because although we are all hypocrites no one likes them. No one.
The question that comes to mind is her and Fitz’s hypocrisy valid? Once Fitz finds out about the affair he gives Andrew a shiner and demands answers from Mellie. We now know that Mellie has covered up her disability to touch Fitz after the rape with her libido changing after having a baby. This partially leads to them emotionally growing apart into what they are today.
When Fitz’s first reaction was anger I have to admit I was angry with him. How can this President who is now forever going to be remembered as a philander be angry with his wife for doing the same? But now that we know that their relationship changed due to Mellie backing off from sex (understandably) the lines are blurred.
Now I’m not saying that withholding sex is ever an excuse for your partner to cheat! But it surely makes it understandable why Fitz would feel ultimately betrayed, and honestly makes Olivia’s relationship with him look like a Plan B. He basically implied that he would have never strayed from his marriage if Mellie was still getting down with him as if that’s all Olivia is—sex. We will never truly know that, but again it blurs the lines.
Olivia on the other hand doesn’t really get a pass for being a hypocrite in this situation. She keeps advising that Mellie and Andrew need to stop what they are doing but why? As long as they are smart about it then how is it different from what she and Fitz have been doing for so long? If Olivia truly believes that infidelity is harmful to their campaign then she would have never agreed to sign on and manage it especially months after being accused of being the president’s mistress (which still unbelievably blew over well for them).
In the end the answer to this question is based on each person’s view on the messy situation. This episode certainly left me wondering however how things will change once Fitz finds out what his father did. I have a feeling that Olivia will really start feeling like the help due to Fitz paying more attention to Mellie to fix some wrongs.
But how do you feel Lydia readers? Does Olivia and Fitz have a right to frown upon Mellie and Andrew?
