So it’s early January which means you have hopefully not fallen off the wagon to complete your New Year’s resolution to be healthy. If you have however, I can’t blame you, since I never even made one. This week was the premiere of The Mindy Project after its holiday hiatus and it tackled the most popular resolution of all – losing weight. In case you were too busy drooling over Danny’s 0% body fat, here are a few workout tips you might have missed.
Your Trainer Should be a Great Motivator
Morgan failed in this aspect, obviously, by being swayed so easily to give Mindy an easy workout. But Danny falls on the other side of the spectrum and seems like he runs his trainees into the ground. Try to find someone in the middle, who is stern enough to keep you focused, but won’t have you stressing even after you have finished your workout.
Trainers Shouldn’t Put Down Your Body
In the end we find out that Danny really is a true sweetheart and accepts Mindy’s body more than she does herself. Still, one of the great things about this episode is Mindy’s insistence (even when she is harder on her body than anyone) that Danny could no longer be her trainer if he had something negative to say about her weight. In truth, many trainers may think that using your ‘flaws’ against you will be motivating, but that type of talk just leads to depression and may cause you to fall off the wagon and into a pint of ice cream.
Pick a Practical Workout Outfit
Mindy showed up to her workout with fabulous sweat-resistant rhinestones and full on makeup. Though we love her for it, there is nothing actually practical about either of these things when it comes to a gym session. So, make better choices to prepare. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes so you can focus on your reps rather than adjusting wayward clothing or worrying about sweating off your cover up.
Know Yourself in Order to Know What Will Motivate You
Danny did this for Mindy by bringing up her love for glamour and pop culture. You can personalize this for yourself, too, by focusing on a goal you have like finishing a marathon or maybe just doing a certain physical activity without feeling out of breath. When you know what you want it can really be the strongest tool to keep you on track.
Don’t Just Work on Your Body, Work on Your Body Image
Mindy has very unhealthy insecurities about her body, to the point where she hides it even from her lovers. After having Danny see her naked, she is forced to look at herself in the mirror and work up to facing her fears…and her nude body in the mirror. This is very important since it doesn’t matter how much you weigh… if you don’t have a healthy body image, you will never feel beautiful or happy.
Spitting Should be Involved
This isn’t scientifically proven but Morgan and Danny both spit in the scenes where working out was involved, so it must be true!
