Let’s face it, 2013 was a great year for music. With that said, it would be impossible to pick my favorite albums of the year (although I’ll probably still try to anyway), so instead, here are my top 13 music moments of 2013 (in no particular order):
The Top 13 Music Moments of 2013
Let me just say that I am really happy I didn’t publish this list before Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album came out, because I can’t imagine this list without it. On the morning of December 13th, the world awoke to 14 new songs and 17 new music videos from Queen B, and there was only one word to describe it: FLAWLESS.
2. Pop Princesses
Here is the “short” list of some of our favorite pop artists who released new albums this year: Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Icona Pop, Beyonce, Fifth Harmony, Miley Cyrus, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, Little Mix, Lorde, Selena Gomez, and Sky Ferreira. I could keep going, but those albums alone are enough music to keep you dancing for the next five years.
3. Rap Gods
It was an exceptional year for rap/hip-hop, and here is another “short” list of some of the artists who released great albums in 2013: Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminem, Drake, Childish Gambino, Earl Sweatshirt and Chance The Rapper.
4. Sitting Pretty On The Throne
In early 2013, an EP by a fairly unknown young artist from New Zealand came my way, and it quickly became obvious that this artist was going to take over the music industry. Fast forward to the end of the year, and this artist, known as Lorde, has released a full length album (Pure Heroine), broken a number of records, and given us some of the best new music in years. And oh yeah, she’s only 17. Talk about impressive.
5. She’s Just Being Miley
Oh my, what a year it’s been for Miley Cyrus. She released a new album (BANGERZ), “twerked” all over Robin Thicke, sang in front of a lip-syncing kitten, hosted SNL, had an MTV documentary and basically caused a scene wherever she went. Whether you love her or hate her, chances are you were talking about her in 2013 and will continue to talk about her into the new year.
6. September 2013
As a whole, 2013 was a great year for music, but in terms of the best month for music, September wins. The beginning of fall brought us new albums from The 1975, Ariana Grande, Arctic Monkeys, London Grammar, The Weeknd, MGMT, Kings of Leon, Drake, CHVRCHES, Icona Pop, Lorde, Justin Timberlake, Haim and many more.
7. OMG!!! 1D!!!
I’m not even remotely ashamed to say that I love One Direction, and lucky for me (and millions of other girls), it was a good year for the boys. Their documentary/concert film, One Direction: This Is Us, made us laugh and cry, their new album, Midnight Memories, made us sing, and 1D Day made us contemplate sitting at our computers for seven hours straight. (P.S. All I want for Christmas is Harry Styles)
8. Reunited and It Feels So Good
Destiny’s Child reunited for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. *NSYNC reunited at the VMAs. TLC reunited at the AMAs with Lil Mama channeling Left Eye. Basically, every group we used to love decided to get back together for a minute or two to let us reminisce about the old days on Twitter, and it was magical.
9. Electronic Music
Not only did some of the best music in 2013 come from electronic artists, but these artists also introduced everyone to newer artists by featuring them on their songs. Avicii gave us Aloe Blacc, Zedd brought us Foxes, Disclosure showcased everyone from Jessie Ware to AlunaGeorge, and Rudimental gave us the gift of Ella Eyre, who I predict is going to be huge in 2014.
10. iTunes Festival
This year’s annual, month-long iTunes Festival featured incredible sets by Ellie Goulding, Bastille, The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Lady Gaga, Haim and many others. In fact, the massive amount of incredible performances this year that I wasn’t able to see live and in person has made me too jealous to continue talking about the festival at all.
11. What Does The Fox Say?
Do I even need to explain why this viral video/song from Norwegian duo, Ylvis, is one of the top music moments of 2013? I dare you to try to get this song out of your head once you’ve heard it. Good luck.
12. Lou Reed
2013 wasn’t all about Miley and fox noises; it was also about saying goodbye to one of the greatest and most influential musicians/songwriters of all time, Lou Reed. Modern music wouldn’t be the same without his influence, and he will be greatly missed.
13. Best Music of 2013
I know I said it would be impossible to pick my favorite albums of the year, but I lied. Instead of picking a final moment for this list, here are my 13 favorite albums of the 2013 (in no particular order):
1. I Love You. – The Neighbourhood
2. Yours Truly – Ariana Grande (My Review)
3. Bad Blood – Bastille
4. The 1975 – The 1975 (My Review)
5. Nothing Was The Same – Drake
6. True Romance – Charli XCX
7. Secondhand Rapture – MS MR
8. Home – Rudimental
9. Pure Heroine – Lorde (My Review)
10. AM – Arctic Monkeys
11. Days Are Gone – Haim (My Review)
12. The Bones of What You Believe – CHVRCHES (My Review)
13. Night Time, My Time – Sky Ferreira
*I probably don’t have to mention that the new albums from Beyonce, One Direction and Lady Gaga were also a few of my favorites. I think that goes without saying.
