To simplify last nights episode, And the Kitty Kitty Spank Spank, Max wants to adopt a stray cat, but Caroline insists they give the cat away. There were some funny jokes, some inappropriate ones and Max spanked Han. I’ve said it before, but the cast of 2 Broke Girls has great chemistry and all the characters have such strong quirks and personalities that anything situation they find themselves in is entertaining. That being said, I’m ready for the stakes to be raised. Granted, the season is only three episodes in, but so much happened to the girls in season two that the show is only going backwards by focusing on short, episode long stories instead of building relationships and plots that can hold their own over multiple episodes. Right now the cupcake window is more a prop than part of the actual storyline and the biggest love interest of season three is this cat.
Yes, the main characters are still great. Sophie was killing it this episode with her Polish superstition. She claims that people who die outside are reincarnated as cats. When she sees a photo of the cat Max and Caroline found, she’s convinced it’s a woman she knew named Nancy who died waiting for an apology from Sophie. This pays off later in the show when Max and Caroline are trying to find the kitty. They start calling for “Nancy” and then mimic Sophie’s accent saying that she wants to apologize. At the end when Caroline gets the cat back for Max, Sophie enters the apartment and freaks out when she learns Nancy the cat is in the apartment. She screams, “I’m happy for you Nancy but I can’t do this right now”.
Han has his own priceless moments during the episode. Max spanks Han to demonstrate why the cat would enjoy it and while the situation was a bit uncomfortable, Han admits that he doesn’t know why, but he liked it. Later on, Han sees Max bending over the counter and gives her a series of spanks. It was basically sexual harassment, but to see Han totally misunderstand the situation and then ask for his own spanks was hysterical. Max is also not the type of lady to let a guy get away with that and dominates the situation when she announces, “One, I’m the boss now, and two, never do that again”.
Some other strong parts of the episode were the bits of continuity incorporated with the plot. For example, it has been established in past episodes like And the Temporary Distraction that Max loves watching funny cat videos on YouTube. From that, it’s easy to believe that someone like Max, who has a hard time loving people, could immediately take to a stray cat. Max also references cats on YouTube when she sneaks the cat into an apartment commenting on the piano and how the cat can now make videos. In addition to that, Max and Andy, Caroline’s ex boyfriend, used to send pictures to each other of “unlikely animal friendships” in the episode And Too Little Sleep. At the end of And the Kitty Kitty Spank Spank Nancy the cat was sleeping on Chestnut. If only Andy was still in the picture, then she could text him a photo. I mean, I can’t be the only person who’s hoping for Andy to come back.
However, as much as the continuity was a nice nod to dedicated viewers, the episode felt more like it belonged in season one. Not much changed in the lives of any of the characters except that Max and Caroline have gained a cat. The episode had its funny moments but now is the time to start developing the new stakes for this season. I want to see the drunks stumbling up to the window looking for cupcakes. I want Max’s Homemade Cupcakes to suffer, or even take off. I want a new love interest for the girls, or Sophie or even Han. Hopefully, the writers planned to open season three with a few fluff episodes before getting back to more fleshed out storylines that last longer than a half hour.
Michelle is a story enthusiast. It’s the best way to describe her obsessions at least. She loves any type of story including those in books, movies, television shows, gossip, history and really anything with a beginning, middle and end. The exception is probably scary stories but even then she tends to read about the plot on Wikipedia. She hates spoilers and her biggest pet peeve is when people ruin any detail of a series she hasn’t seen yet. Even if she’s three seasons behind and show no sign of catching up. Other things she likes to do when she’s not consuming stories include dancing (on stage or in her car), sending pictures of her painted nails to friends, enjoying the Great Lake State and watching her mother cook Indian food while pretending to understand the process.
