Well this episode was so juicy and just slow enough to really savor it which is different from the usual fast pace that Shonda loves to give us the dirt. Of course we get to see Lisa Kudrow this week as Josie Marcus, an unexpected contender as the Democratic candidate for the next presidential election. Then we Cyrus and Mellie run around with their heads cut off trying to take her down!
In the beginning Cyrus and Mellie try to get ahead of this by finding a campaign runner. Obviously Olivia can’t do it after being one of the suspected women to have had an affair with Fitz so they approach a man who just call it like it is. “Fitz is a loser” and will be one most likely in the next election. Mellie and Cryus are angry by this response, but what can they expect? Not only is Fitz a cheater, but it sounds like he hasn’t been that great running the country.
Olivia then gets a new job with Josie. Can I just say Josie is an awesome powerful woman that knows what she wants? I can’t wait to see more from Lisa in the future because I would vote for her in real life! However Josie makes Olivia track down people in her home state to shut them up about a pregnancy she had when she was 15. This is where things start going into Tyler Perry territory. It turns out that Josie did have her baby, but her mother raised her daughter as her sister, Candace. After this confusing baby shuffle is revealed Olivia tells Josie that she will just have to come clean about it. She does in a Democratic candidate debate and the public sympathizes with her (which equals votes), and her sister/daughter storms off. Because although Josie never says that she is her daughter, she isn’t an idiot and can do math…the thing is won’t the public still want to know about this baby? Will someone find out about Candace and bring this all up again? I guess we will have to see to find out, but a half truth is better than a lie.
During all this time Huck and Jake have been playing secret agents. You know doing what agents do by hacking, and downloading files then sneaking away the very last second before somebody comes in to find them. But all cheesy agent stuff is always so fun right? Right?! Anyways Fitz got secret service to bring Jake to him in order to play basketball. Way to steal Obama’s swag! They kind of talk about Olivia, and Jake somewhat hints to him that he knows about Remington. Nothing gets resolved in this scene, but we learn that Fitz has serious anger issues and loves to foul while playing basketball.
Now it’s time for that pesky love triangle update. This week Fitz totally won in the tug-o-war over Olivia, but Jake honestly didn’t put up much of a fight. Jake goes to Olivia’s office to see her and he figures out that she is pathetically waiting by the phone for Fitz’s usual call before the White House correspondents dinner, where he weeps over his bad jokes and she fixes them. This is where Olivia and Fitz’s codependency makes me barf. Olivia doesn’t think she would get this call, but in the end it does come. She tells him he needs to joke about being a cheater to get cool points. She also forces Jake to bring her to the event so she can watch Fitz be a bad comedian.
The dinner is terrible from Olivia’s terrible dominatrix hairdo (isn’t everyone supposed to look conservative for these shindigs?), to Jake trying to have a conversation with her as she is drooling over Fitz, and finally to where Mellie begs Olivia to work on Fitz’s campaign. This is where I cried nooooooooooooooooooo!
Now I don’t know where you stand with Mellie, but most people hate her for the sake of Olivia. I don’t. She is a mother and wife to a man who has openly hated her and has been cheating on her. This is awful and I was so glad when she broadcasted his dirty ways on television. I am disappointed however that she didn’t leave him to run for president herself. Instead she is begging her husband’s mistress to work for them again. This is a crazy awkward scene, and you can tell Olivia wants to say no to Mellie, but yes to Fitz. I however just want to scream to both of them “he doesn’t deserve either of you!”
Now to make things fun Josie calls Olivia back and she says that she wants her to be her campaign manager. Then we find out from Jake and Huck that Fitz shot down a plane in Iceland that had a bunch of passengers on it which includes Olivia’s mother. Yes this show went to crazy soap opera twist and back! Now we have to find out how much of a back bone Olivia has. Will she say no to becoming Fitz’s campaign manager? And more importantly will she leave him after finding out he murdered her mother?
