This episode was a huge win for The Mindy Project in many ways! The first one is that we got to lose that awful guy Jason without having him on the screen for more than 4 minutes. I knew he would only have two episodes like most of Mindy’s love interests, but it feels so good to be right. Another win is that tonight the show made more people care about the two new troubling characters, Tamra and Peter.
After Peter’s awful introduction as a privileged doctor who immediately wrote off Mindy because she was an Indian woman, I pretty much hated his character. In this episode Mindy is having the same feelings because Peter still acts like a bro and they don’t have anything in common. She then takes Peter to lunch after a nudge from Danny to try and get to know him. The lunch goes awful because Mindy wants to only talk about what she is interested and he rightfully ditches her.
Back at the office Mindy announces that the office’s rooftop will get a gazebo garden. Morgan uses this news to get alone time with Tamra. He asks her if she wants to help put together the garden with her, and after complaining about her dead beat boyfriend, Rayron, she agrees to meet him. Tamra is very much an annoying stereotype at this point, but don’t worry she still ends up a bit more likable by the end.
Word is out that Peter has been training to be a UFC fighter (how bo-tastic!)and he has his first match. Danny encourages Mindy to go in solidarity for him since their lunch was such a bust. She says that she will stop by but she has a date that night with terrible Jason so she can’t stay long. Of course she goes and all chaos ensues since she weakens Peter’s spirit by telling him his ex is engaged, and we get two cameos with Kendra Wilkinson and Josh Peck. Yes you did read those names correctly…
But before going into that mess, Tamra and Morgan actually have a fun night putting up lights around the new gazebo. Morgan invites her to dinner at a Chinese restaurant, but she turns him down because she is still with dead beat Rayron. I was definitely suckered in after this scene and felt like I needed them together. It might just be that Tamra was so much more tolerable than ever in this scene with Morgan, but I can’t wait to see where this goes.
Now to the UFC match, Peter is losing because he has his ex’s engagement on his mind. I don’t feel bad for his character at all at this point since he admitted that he was a bully at school and has no remorse, but like Tamra I do end up liking him in the end. Mindy jumps in the ring to give him a speech to use his sadness into aggression. He does do better afterwards, but still loses.
Cue Josh Peck! Morgan strays off from the group at the match and gets accosted by Rayron. That’s right we get another role of a white boy playing gangsta for laughs, and at first I was very disappointed. If Mindy was going to go all out with stereotypes with Tamra couldn’t she just give him a black boyfriend? Mindy’s type for boys have no end since we get another white brunette character, but I have to admit it was still interesting to see the kid from Drake and Josh do something new.
Rayron is angry that Morgan spent the night with Tamra, and tries to fight Morgan. Morgan beats him up and gives him love advice yet still threatens to steal his girlfriend (which needs to happen). At the end of the night Mindy stitches up Peter and they bond over talking about his broken heart. They then learn that this is where they can bond, and all is better. This scene showing Peter’s sensitive side definitely made him redeemable. I won’t be looking forward to seeing him later, but I probably won’t eye roll as much when he does come up on screen.
Now for the other good part…Mindy stood up Jason who was waiting at the restaurant and then her apartment. He goes to the hospital to break things off. Mindy tried to stop him which still induces winces. It’s obvious that Mindy didn’t really like this guy or else she would have remembered to make time for him, but it seems like she would settle on anyone to just have a boyfriend. Luckily he walks out of her life meaning we will get someone new next week.
So Lydia readers are you excited that Mindy and Jason are over? Do you also feel like this episode was great for Peter and Tamra?
