So many amazing things happens this episode and it’s all thanks to great writing. Mindy Kaling, who wrote it, deserves major kudos for creating a story that was both funny and heartwearming — the ideal combination that has been slightly lacking in recent episodes. We actually went through a whole episode of Mindy flying solo instead of going on a date! And guess what? It was more entertaining.
So Friday night is date night, but for once Mindy isn’t going out. Since she doesn’t have any suitors she is in her scrubs and glasses, and is more focused on her allergies. I love Mindy this way. She is more relatable when she’s a nerdy girl, and more likable than the girl who is too self-absorbed.
Mindy and Morgan run into Cliff in the elevator with his date for the evening. It’s crazy how long it’s taking for him and Mindy to hook up (though it’s probably still going to happen.) Mindy feels even worse about herself, but she is spending the night at Danny’s because she lost her purse with her keys, cell phone and wallet in it. Danny is obviously hesitant about having Mindy over because she is an emotional mess that feels like she is going to die alone, but she ends up saving him from ‘crazy next door neighbor’.
Another perfect aspect about this episode is that it showed how some men love to label girls as crazy, rather than face the fact that they screwed that ‘crazy’ woman over. Danny has basically been hooking up with this girl, but wanted her to back off the minute he felt things getting too intense. He has Mindy pretend to be with him and, naturally, she comes up with an elaborate story about a romantic proposal and baby on the way. When it comes out that Danny is a liar Mindy pretends to be his scorned lover.
In the end Danny gives up his bed for Mindy and sleeps on the couch, cooks her breakfast, and then wants to talk about their relationship. Everything looks like they will end up kissing until Mindy shoots the opportunity in the face by mentioning that she wants to try things out with Cliff. YOU ARE BREAKING OUR HEARTS MINDY! Along with Danny’s, who gets jealous, but doesn’t really speak up for himself. Let’s hope it doesn’t take a whole season for him to FINALLY admit his feelings.
So this whole time the comedy gods gave us gold. Peter and Morgan find Mindy’s purse that has her cellphone in it and they end up flirting with Cliff through text on her phone. It’s pretty awesome how much they act like teenage girls together by flirting with another man and using wink emojis. I always loved Morgan but this episode gave more needed points for Peter’s likability. Anyways things get too hot and heavy to the point where Cliff just invites himself over to Mindy’s house. How rude and realistic.
The boys end up meeting Cliff there where they’ve concocted an elaborate get-together and they start playing a board game while others socializing around them for their event. The whole time they are texting Cliff to think Mindy is in the bathroom, but the truth comes out and Cliff tells them to delete the texts. The writers brought back Ellie Kemper’s character for some reason and she goes home with Cliff, and then calls Mindy and leaves her a voicemail telling her about it. When Mindy gets her phone she gets her voicemail and reads the dirty texts messages to Cliff. Uh oh.
So we have yet to see how awkward things will get between Cliff and Mindy. Also will she try to still pursue Cliff? What do you think was the best part of this episode, Lydia readers?
