So last night The Mindy Show approached race the way most comedies would. They throw every stereotype at their audiences and give a partial (if you’re lucky) message on how to approach race. I was so happy when Danny finally brought up the fact that Mindy sleeps with nothing but white guys (with dark hair usually), she does reveal that she hooked up with a Korean guy before in her defense. GIVE US AN EPISODE ABOUT IT MINDY OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!
So the whole race talk was started by Danny’s patient who wrote a glowing review about him and most of the office on her white supremacy site. Their arch nemeses, the midwives discover this and put on a whole protest against the practice.
Sadly this storyline completely took away from the storyline that last week started. We never get to see Danny try to talk to Mindy about their relationship again. We never get a conversation between Mindy and Cliff besides an awkward elevator ride that included Morgan! We do know that Cliff is seeing Heather now which is lame, but can that really be the death sentence to any relationship between him and Mindy?
Well who knows, but to help with the practice’s sinking reputation we get a new character named Priscilla who is a PR consultant. The whole back and forth between her and Danny was cliché. I don’t understand why he feels like he needs to hook up with awful women, but to be fair Mindy is doing the exact same thing. They don’t deserve each other until they break this habit and want a meaningful relationship.
This episode was also very much about Tamra since she is also a minority in the practice. Priscilla advises the partners that Mindy and Tamara should make a statement about how much they love working at the practice. When the girls go out to dinner together things go south because Tamra brought Rayron and Mindy wasn’t having it. Mindy tries to tell Tamara that Rayron is a loser, but says ‘you need to be someone more like you.’ Now Tamra’s character definitely loses points this episode for twisting the meaning of those words and publicly throwing Mindy under the bus by calling her racist for being against her interracial relationship. I get that she did it to teach Mindy a lesson about speaking down to people but let’s face it, in the real world she would have lost her job.
Anyways after last week’s game changing episode this week failed to continue the caliber. It didn’t answer any of the posed questions like where Mindy’s relationships are heading with Danny and Cliff. You can argue that Mindy had to face her lack of range in taste of men, but I highly doubt it will change anything for the future. It didn’t even get us a cute exchange between Tamara and Morgan! Yes I am still rooting for that to happen.
Oh and before I forget Mindy announces to the angry protesters that the practice will get a van and go to low income neighborhoods to give medical attention to people in need. This was all Peter’s idea and he very much wants to become a partner. I say NO! There are way too many partners already, and Peter hasn’t been there very long. I do think the van will bring us good comedy like the medical tent at the musical festival earlier this season. Fingers crossed!
